The best way to predict the future is to create it

STRP was founded in 2006 and has grown to become one of Europe’s largest indoor festivals in the field of technology and art. STRP aims to establish an open, continuous and critical dialogue between humans, technology, society and future. STRP initiates, produces and presents innovative art and visions whereby creative technology plays a significant role, for an international and curious audience.

STRP 2019-2020

Critical Optimism and Positive Futurism
‘The best way to predict the future is to create it’, is the (working) title of our programme for the coming years. The programme is a critical optimistic exploration into positive futurism and the role that artists and technology can play in this.

Imagining the future is one of the most difficult things there is. What we (think we) know is the past, and we often look to the future with the same perspective. In confusing times, we like to flee into the illusion of an era in which the world seemed clearer, safer and friendlier. Conservatism seems to be the answer to questions that are too big and changes that are taking place too fast. Whoever dares to dream of a better world for everyone is quickly seen as a naive idealist. Fear of the future is understandable, but it narrows our minds and impedes our ability to explore new ways, strategies and models.

STRP is a guide into exploring the ways of being critically optimistic and looking to the future more openly and positively. We want to inspire people through presentations of current art, whereby technology plays an important role in the development and presentation processes. We also want to inform the public through tours during the conference and through the realisation of an extensive educational programme. We want to activate and stimulate people to make their own contribution to a more positive future. We stimulate the creation of new work through commissioning artists and other makers.

The STRP programme for 2019 and 2020 will focus on a future that is (perhaps) better than we all dare to think. In order to successfully carry out this research programme and to fulfil our role as guide, we have chosen to depart from the Biennial structure and to create a layered and undulating programming that extends over several years. STRP profiles itself more as a cultural initiative that presents a coherent multi-year programme, starting with a series of pressing questions. This will give STRP more continuity and increase its presence in the city, the country and in the international e-culture landscape, so that better and more frequent use can be made of current events. As such, we will be able to involve and serve our audience and partners better and more frequently.

The STRP continuous multi-year programme consists of four components: STRP Festival, STRP Share, STRP Scenarios & Story, STRP Pop Ups.

STRP Festival is a 10-day event with an extensive expo, a conference, a music and performance programme and an educational programme. A STRP Festival XL will take place in 2019, and in 2020 we will organise STRP Festival L, a more compact version of the festival.
STRP Share is the STRP education and participation programme. Share is a part of STRP Festival but actually continues all year long. A new STRP programme component is STRP Scenarios. These are open dialogues with doers, makers, activists and thinkers who are involved hands-on with a positive future. STRP Scenarios take place 3 to 4 times a year and culminate with the STRP Festival in a STRP Story at the end of 2020. STRP Pop Ups are projects realised by STRP during and with Eindhoven festivals. In 2018 we will have Pop Ups during Emoves (30 June and 1 July) and during Glow (10-17 November). With these Pop Ups we aim to offer a STRP programme to a wider audience.
